Dog slipping on laminate or tile floors: the four spots to cover first

Laminate and tile are the floors where owners first notice the slipping. Both are hard, both are smooth, and most have a sheen that makes the pad slide before the toes can grip. Wet paws from the garden make it worse. The fix is not the whole floor. It is four spots and a path between them.

How do you fix a slippery laminate floor for a dog?

You do not need to change the floor. Cover the parts your dog uses: the four spots below and the path between them. A path of washable non-slip tiles for laminate and tile gives the paws pile to press into, grips the floor with no glue, and lifts clean when you want the floor back. Smooth tile works the same way. The four spots

  1. Beside the bed. Standing up from lying down is the hardest push-off of the day.
  2. The turn out of the bedroom. Corners send paws sideways.
  3. The run to the water bowl. The fastest the dog moves indoors, on the smoothest floor.
  4. The spot by the back door. Wet paws, excitement, and tile.

Wet paws and the back door

The back door is where laminate and tile are at their worst. Paws come in wet from the yard, the dog is excited, and the first few steps land on a smooth floor that is now damp too. Two things help:

  • A doormat first. A coarse doormat right at the door takes most of the water off before the paws reach the path. Keep a towel on a hook for rainy days.
  • Tiles after the mat. Start the tile path a step in from the door, beyond the doormat, so the tiles stay dry. If a tile does get wet, lift it, dry the floor and the tile, then press it back.

How many tiles

Laying on laminate and tile

  • Clean and dry the floor first. Grip backing holds the surface, not the dust on it.
  • Press each tile down along the edges. It grips on contact, no tape, no glue.
  • Cut around door frames and furniture legs with household scissors.
  • If a tile gets wet, lift it, dry both sides, press it back. A damp tile on a smooth floor can slide.
  • On textured non-slip tile the backing has nothing flat to hold. Use rugs there instead.

Dog slipping on tile floors: what is different about tile

Tile and laminate are slippery for the same reason: a hard, smooth face with nothing for the pads to press into. Glazed tile and polished stone often have more shine than laminate, and wet paws make both worse. The fix is the same: cover the route with something the paw can press into. How do I stop my old dog slipping on laminate?

Do the tiles stay put on laminate?
