The top is sandpaper. Each time your dog scratches across it, the tips of the nails are filed down a little.

Why keep nails short?

Long nails tap and slide on hard floors. Short nails give paws a better grip on smooth floors.

Does it replace nail clipping?

It helps between trims. Plan on the odd clip as well, and dewclaws never touch the board.
